A guide to minority and specialty nursing scholarships for students
Health care employers are looking to hire BSN-prepared nurses to bolster the level of quality patient care and treatment services at their facilities. For associate-prepared or licensed nurses, this means a return to higher education in order to qualify for new health care roles, including management positions. Scholarships are a viable means of affording a bachelor’s degree and limiting out-of-pocket expenses. In part two of our series on nursing scholarships, we provide information on scholarships designed for minorities and specialty nurses. Like general scholarships, these rewards can be applied towards an RN to BSN online program.
These scholarships are available to minority nursing students enrolled in an accredited BSN program.
The AAMN Foundation is pleased to offer educational scholarships that are made possible through the generosity of our AAMN members and the benevolent giving of select groups of donors. Scholarship availability is dependent on funds and are offered only to men in nursing.
Scholarships opportunities begin in February of each year and are open only to Native Americans.
ExceptionNurse.com offers eight scholarships in $250 and $500 amounts to students with a documented disability who have applied to, or already been admitted to, a college or university program on a full-time basis.
Henry Dunant Scholarship for Male Nursing Students
Applicants must be able to prove acceptance into an accredited nursing program, currently hold a GPA above 2.5, and submit a 1-2 page essay on the history of men in nursing.
The Indian Health Service (IHS) offers three scholarships for American Indian and Alaska Native students in order to train health professionals to staff Indian health programs. Three scholarships are awarded each year.
NBNA is committed to excellence in education and conducts continuing education programs for nurses and allied health professionals throughout the year. The association provides annual scholarships for students. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000.
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) annually awards scholarships to outstanding students in the summer for use during the following academic year. The awards are made on the basis of academic merit.
The JACL has been helping students achieve their educational dreams with the National Scholarship and Awards Program since 1946. The program currently offers over 30 awards, with an annual total of more than $70,000 in scholarships to qualified students nationwide. Every applicant must be an active National JACL member. JACL Membership is open to everyone of any ethnic background.
The Spina Bifida Association awards six different annual scholarships to students with spina bifida or other documented disabilities. The SBA’s Scholarship program has been reorganized to offer support to a larger number of students.
These scholarships are available to nurses is specialized fields seeking career advancement. Many are offered by specialized medical associations that require membership for consideration.
The AAOHN offers half a dozen scholarships to member nurses who have decided to further their education in occupational nursing.
Travel nurses who have completed 26 weeks of assignments and are pursuing their BSN are eligible.
Applicants must be current Active Category members of ASPAN and a component for the past two full years prior to the application deadline of July 1.
Each year ANNA offers scholarships that provide funding to support members in their pursuit of higher education. Applicants must be current full members of ANNA for a minimum of two years and be actively involved in nephrology nursing.
The DNA Recognition Program offers educational scholarships, grants for research and advocacy, and an outstanding service award to members of the DNA on an annual basis. You must be a member of DNA to be eligible for any of DNA’s awards.
In an effort to help members meet academic goals, two academic scholarships are awarded yearly. Applicant must have a minimum of two years of membership in SPN prior to applying.
