The Ohio Nurses Association (ONA), Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) and the Ohio Organization for Nurse Executives (OONE) are coming together in the hopes of meeting an important goal: improving nursing in the state of Ohio. However, a growing nursing shortage is expected to create a 19% deficit in Ohio when it comes to nursing professionals available to meet this need. Without important and immediate action to improve the work environment of nurses, the way care is delivered and nursing education, the Ohio healthcare system will struggle to meet the needs of residents of the state.

Who is Involved?
The various respected groups involved in the Nursing 2015 collaborative includes OHA, OONE and ONA. OHA currently represents about 170 hospitals and 40 healthcare systems. It also has more than 1,900 professional members of 11 societies including OONE. OONE is a professional organization for nurse executives and managers. ONA is an organization that represents over 8,500 registered nurses in Ohio.
Since June of 2005, these three groups have been working together to create a plan for the future of Ohio nursing. Their strategy is the first of its kind in the U.S. and benefits from a collaboration of nursing leaders and industries that are involved in healthcare and serving patients. The central goal is to address staffing issues and lessen the perceived need for legislative mandates to solve professional issues in the nursing industry. Nursing 2015 strives to improve the nursing profession through the following strategy:
- Helping nurses to be self-directed, accountable and in control of their work environment
- Influencing the delivery of high-quality care to promote successful patient outcomes through nursing leadership
- Ensuring that an adequate number of nurses is introduced into the workforce
- Ensuring that nurses are diverse, highly educated and valued as clinical leaders in healthcare
The group’s main concerns are positive innovations and changes to nursing education, nursing leadership capacity and the work environment and staffing culture of nursing professionals.
As these nursing groups worked together they realized that they shared many of the same goals. Because of this, a variety of actions plans are in development. These future plans are focused on the following:
- Identifying ways to ensure that nurses are appropriately educated to fill their roles in the changing healthcare system
- Improving the practice environment in both physical and cultural ways
- Preparing nurses to have and apply the leadership skills they need to function effectively in future roles

The Nursing 2015 strategy for the future is based on three general directives. First, the group hopes to create a system in which highly educated nurses are prepared to fulfill evolving roles in a dynamic health care system and nursing resources meet the changing demands of healthcare. They also want to raise worksite standards so that they support quality nursing care in a safe environment, with the result being better patient outcomes. Nursing 2015 aims to foster an approach in which nurses are independently and collectively recognized for the leadership and value they bring to achieving high quality care and positive outcomes. Finally, they want practice culture conditions and benefits to provide universal benefit for nurses, consumers and the organizations involved.
